  • As an applicant for the Doctor of Philosophy you must have:

    1. a degree of Masters by Research from RMIT; or
    2. a degree of Masters by Coursework from RMIT which includes a research program with a duration of at least one semester full-time (or part-time equivalent or
    3. a degree of Bachelor from RMIT with a minimum upper second honours; or
    4. another award as deemed equivalent; or
    5. such qualifications or experience as RMIT considers appropriate; or
    6. current candidature for an RMIT masters program approved for transfer to the Doctor of Philosophy program.

    Selection tasks

    Research proposal and supervisor

    Proposal: You must attach a substantive research proposal that is 2 to 5 pages in length which articulates the intent, significance and originality of the proposed topic using the following headingsa) title / topic
    b) research questions to be investigated in the context of existing research/literature in the area
    c) significance and impact of the research
    d) methodology / research tasks required to undertake the research
    e) particular needs (e.g. resources, facilities, fieldwork or equipment that are necessary for your proposed research program, if applicable)

    Supervisor: Your application will not be considered if you have not discussed your research topic with a proposed senior and associate supervisor or joint senior supervisors. You must provide the names of the academic staff in the school you have applied to and with whom you have discussed your proposed research.

    English language requirements

    To undertake most research programs at RMIT, you must have achieved one of the following English proficiency test results within the last 2 years:

    • Academic IELTS (minimum score) overall band of 6.5 with no individual band below 6.0
    • TOEFL (Paper-based): minimum score of 580 (with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.5)
    • TOEFL (Internet-based): minimum score of 92 with a minimum of 20 in each section
    • Cambridge English (Advanced CAE): CAE Grade B (no band less than Good)
    • Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic): minimum score of 58 (no communication band less than 50).
  • IELTS 7.5+ Each Band 7.0+; TOEFL IBT 106 with minimum of 24 all sections; Pearson Test of English (Academic) 72 (no communication band less than 65); CAE 2014: 74 with no less than 'good' in each skill, 2015 onwards: 191 with no less than185 in any component; CPE 2015 onwards: 191 with no less than 185 in each component
  • If you would like to study in Australia at a university or tertiary level then you may be eligible for the Higher Education Sector Visa (subclass 573) or Postgraduate Research Sector Visa (subclass 574). If your intention is to study a non-award foundation studies course or components of a course (other than English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) that does not lead to an award then the Non Award Sector visa (subclass 575) may suit your needs. For those who intend to come to Australia to undertake English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) the Independent ELICOS Sector visa (subclass 57) provides this option.
